Maximize Basement Lighting

To cut your basement remodel cost and to make the most of your new space you will need light sources. Often basements have no windows at all or only small, low level windows that don't let in much light.

If there's no way to add or to enlarge existing windows, use light colors on the walls and reflective surfaces like mirrors to enlarge and lighten the space. New products called "solar tubes" exist that can channel outside light but do not require power. Will these units work in your basement?

If all else fails, concentrate on adding artificial lighting first so your other projects will go more smoothly. Indirect lighting that splashes large pools of light onto the ceiling will make the space look bigger as well as lighter. Consider installing spotlights in the ceiling of the basement. An old standard is to install fluorescent lighting but many people find the quality of light they produce to be unnatural. Newer fixtures, even floor lighting, if strategically spaced will make those dark corners fade away.

Don't Ignore Moisture

It does not matter what the new purpose of your new basement space will be, you always have to make sure that the walls and the basement floor are completely dry before you can start with your basement remodeling ideas to redecorate the space. Make sure the downspouts are extended well away from the foundation of your home. Check the walls and floor for any signs of damp or water stains. If you find any, don't proceed with remodeling plans until you have discovered and corrected the source of the dampness. (Don't neglect to inspect crawl spaces and vents as well.)

Insects

It's possible when you're checking out your basement surfaces you will find unwanted houseguests in the form of termites, roaches, or other unwanted pests - many of which are attracted to damp areas. Be sure to completely eradicate these pests before proceeding. Often you will need professional help with insect extermination, especially if you are dealing with termites. It's important to find the source of the infestation, the nest, and kill it, not just to destroy the swarming insects. This is a key aspect of your remodel and must be addressed before you proceed.

The Benefits of Basement Remodeling

Once you finish basement remodeling you will be able to enjoy increased functionality in your home as well as added value to your home equity. With a basic remodel, basement space can be put to work for you, your children, or your guests as an attractive and functional "new" room in your home -- one that's always been there but that has been transformed with creative basement remodeling ideas.
