Improving Home Curb Appeal

Strong curb appeal designs not only let your home stand out on your street but also make it more attractive to potential buyers.
Creating curb appeal is as important to the real estate process as many interior remodeling projects. The external appearance of your home is the first "statement" your property makes. By following a few basic guidelines, you can assure that your house has nothing but positive things to "say."

How to determine if the Home has Curb Appeal?

In assessing your house, "curb appeal" can involve a number of factors. What catches your eye about your home and what features that you would like to stand out are being hidden in some way? What makes the house different in a positive or negative way from other homes in your neighborhood? Curb appeal is a delicate balancing act. Your home shouldn't look exactly like the others on the street but it should fit the "feel" of the neighborhood while maintaining its individuality.

Strongly consider the fact that you may not be able to be objective about the appearance of your own home. You are used to how your property looks and your eye will pass over things that others may find unsightly or unacceptable. One of the best ways to determine curb appeal is to ask your realtor for an unabashed evaluation of your property. At first you will probably be offended and angered by what your realtor has to say but if you are considering selling your property remember that your realtor is a specialist. Set your feelings aside and listen.

Depending on the age of your home and what you hope to gain from its sale, curb appeal projects can be as simple as adding a few nice plants to the porch and painting the shutters or as involved as tearing down a sagging porch and installing a fresh set of steps. Sometimes homeowners have to spend a little money to make a great deal of money. Curb appeal is not a factor you can ignore.
