Don't Let Garden Tools Take Over

By necessity many people have to store their gardening items in the garage. Don't let them take over. Designate one corner or area of a wall for nothing but garden supplies. You might consider getting a portable garden bench or basket in which to carry small items back and forth like gloves, shears, and clippers. In between work sessions the bench or basket serves as storage. Hang large items like rakes, hoes, and shovels from wall hooks.

Park the lawn mower close to the door and don't allow other items to obstruct its path in and out of the garage. These are items to which you want easy access so resist the urge to pile things in front of each other or to stack items. The seat of the riding mower is not the place to put a sack of potting soil but if it's going to the garden anyway, the wheel barrow might be a good place to store the bag until you're ready to work with it.

If possible, the optimum storage solution for lawn and garden items is a backyard shed. The same organizational rules apply to that space as well. Always store pesticides and fertilizers out of reach of children and if recommended, in a ventilated container. That's not hard to create. Simply punch or drill holes in the side of a secure plastic bin so fumes don't build up inside.

Pool Supplies Take Up Space

Chemicals used to maintain the condition of a swimming pool should be stored with the same caution as garden substances. A backyard shed or a portion of the garage can also be used for these items but potentially toxic substances should be kept well out of the reach of children.

During the warm months it may be possible to simply leave rafts, water wings, and floating toys in or around the pool since they are probably used often. In the off season, deflate rafts and similar items. Allow them to dry completely to prevent mold and mildew. These items can either be stored in plastic bins or placed in large leaf bags and put on a high shelf or a special rack for the winter months.

Organization throughout the House

Getting organized and staying that way does take conscious effort. Try to purchase furniture items with a maximum number of drawers and cabinets. Optimize that space with dividers, racks and bins. Clearly label boxes and bins so you can easily recognize what's inside.

In bedroom closets, use sturdy wooden hangars. For men's clothes select hangars that will hold both a pair of trousers and a shirt or jacket. Put ties and belts on hanging units and shoes in racks. Fold and stack sweaters by color. If possible rotate items in and out of storage bins by season. You don't need access to your wool sweaters in July. Seasonal rotation also promotes regular closet cleaning and straightening.

Bathroom clutter is always an ongoing problem. Keep toiletry items in baskets under the sink. Bring the basket out while you are dressing and return it to the cabinet when you are done. Have a hamper for towels and keep medicines in a medicine chest. Women should consider using make-up chests or boxes for their various lipsticks, eyeliners, and other accoutrement. In addition to creating clutter many of these items are messy and leave stains or marks.

Most home storage ideas fall under the category of organizing products. You can find home storage products for almost every thing and in almost every material from plastic to resin, metal, or wood. These items can themselves become clutter so make sure that your storage solution has a function and is one that you can work to accommodate into your daily routine. Storage solutions that are not used are not solutions at all, they simply become part of the problem.

You can overcome home storage problems.

There are many creative home storage ideas for all the necessary equipment and "stuff" in your home. Home storage containers and home storage bins can fit into any part of your home and will help you to conserve space and to store things away neatly. You can solve your home storage problems with innovative home storage solutions and some dedication to the project. Many of these multi-purpose home storage products even have the added benefit of enhancing the beauty of your home.
